i need
to do something with this page. i dont make money on this stuff,
and i really dont care what OS you use; if it works for you.
i use ubuntu AND xp on the same computer, because xp runs more
high-end 3d chat games. ubuntu seems to have more fun low-end
games, though, and it comes with them all ready to go.
The Very Basics of
Ubuntu
Control Your Computer with Simplicity and Elegance
Why are so many people moving
to Ubuntu?
Same reason they went to Firefox
instead of InternetExplorer: Peace of mind. Compatibility. Supportive
community. Completely free.
* Ubuntu is easy. Each OS serves it's
purpose, but Ubuntu's purpose is to be human-friendly! Apple's purpose is to look clean.
Microsoft's purpose is to be complex.
* Apple, Ubuntu, and WindowsXP,
are the top three OS's on computers today.
An OS means Operating System.
It's everything you see on your computer screen. Apple and WindowsXP
charge money for their OS's, while Ubuntu is free. Ubuntu is
easier to use, in my opinion, and it comes everything you need
to be creative on your computer...unlike WindowsXP. Ubuntu comes
with a professional typing program, and a top quality photo editing
program. WindowsXP doesn't do that. You can make an old WindowsXP
computer act better than new if you place Ubuntu on it, because
Ubuntu runs very fast and is a very clean OS. Simply order an
Ubuntu CD, pop it into your computer, and click Install.
First back up all your files to an external hard drive, of course.
You can even test run Ubuntu without removing WindowsXP. The
one disadvantage to Ubuntu is some gadgets out there only
work with the now-decommissioned WindowsXP. You can put it on
all your computers without hassle. Know though, that Ubuntu does
not run all of WindowsXP software, as Ubuntu has it's own software.
Each OS has it's own software, and much of the popular software
is available on all OS's. Software is also known as programs
or applications. Software is what you place in your OS
to do specific things the OS doesn't naturally do, such as Photoshop
and or Greeting Card Making. Ubuntu makes software easy, by providing
a guide so you can find software to really bring out your creativity.
Ubuntu is safe, too, as there is no worry about harmful software.
WindowsXP comes on many computers, and is very easily suseptible
to harmful software called Viruses, Trojans, and Spyware. The
reason for this is WindowsXP is targeted by harmful software
makers called Hackers, due to it's common avilability on new
computers. The Dell computer maker has started selling computers
with Ubuntu, so that you can have a pleasent and error-free computer
experience. Ubuntu may be wonderful, but it's still an OS, and
those are not perfect. So just back up your files regularly and
be aware of taking care of your computer. Ubuntu automates pretty
much all the upkeep of a computer, but it's up to you to make
sure Ubuntu gets through the ocassional software error, called
"bugs". I really do recomend Ubuntu, and I use it often.
It's free, faster, and safer than any other OS. It's great for
the tech-illiterate, too, as it's very streight forward, and
has a large support community. Google heavily supports Ubuntu,
they use it heavily too. Are you using Ubuntu on your computers?
* Ubuntu requires very little computer
memory to run. You can put it on any ol' computer. WindowsVista
requres a huge expensive amount of memory to run. I'm not sure
what Apple requires, but it's most likely expensive and extremely
propriatary (like most things Apple does) which is a very bad
thing because it's not compatible with anything.
* Ubuntu updates all it's software in
one simple little screen. You just open it and let it do its
thing. In windows you can't do that, and have to spend hours
updating each software at a time, and generally freezing your
computer in the process.
* The popular phrase "apples and
oranges". Each OS serves it's purpose.

What are some sollutions to
common mistakes people make with Ubuntu?
* Geek community making things harder
than they really are. Ubuntu was born out of Linux, and Linux
used to be only for the technically minded. Ubuntu breaks through
those barriars, being super easy to use. Long time Linux users
may try to make you think you need to do complex math to use
Ubuntu, but that's just not true. There is an easy sollution
to everything, without typing big formulas. Don't get burried
in tech lingo unless you WANT to. Explore at your own pace. There
are a lot of excited computer geeks out there who want to be
supportive, but don't let them be pushy. Your computer is far
easier than driving a car, and you don't have to be a mechanic
unless you choose to. That said, I do heavily recomend at least
a basic typing class.
* Back up your files. This means
to copy your files to a different hard drive. Reason:
Hard Drive Failures happen all the time. Computers can
break, and they do. The general public seems to have some phobia
about protecting their files. You know, the music and photos
you store on your computer. All this will one day POOF be gone
unless you make a backup and place it in a safe location. You
don't have to, but if you want to keep your camera photos then
you really should do one of these: Keep a copy of your important
files on your computer as well as a "flash thumb drive".
When one or the either blows up, you'll still have the
remaining copy safe and sound. Instead of a flash thumb drive,
you can use a memory card, CD, DVD, or "external hard drive".
Some people even print out many of thier files onto paper, although
this takes a long time and only text/images can be printed. Whatever
place your put your files, make sure there is enough room for
what you have. Floppy disks do NOT cut it in this modern age,
as they are slow and very low quality. Your computer can only
store your files for an unknown number of years, usually three
to five, before something goes wrong. Back up your files to a
safe place at least once a month. I've seen some people use a
photo sharing service like DeviantArt.Com and GooglePicasaAlbum to store
photos.
